AI Helps Introduce My Music to Peeps

As a creative, I enjoy writing songs and creating art.  As a music producer, songwriter, and vocalist, I found myself with a catalog of songs our team created with an audience of friends, family, and business associates. Well, this is fine, but I wanted to reach out and promote the stories in my songs as I start with the story and lyrics. My team and I then craft music to match and/or alter the lyrics. While streaming helps a bit, you have to actively market your songs because every day, thousands of songs are created by folks today, and tomorrow, AI will add to the mix. So, how can I encourage my audience to grow? Well, AI now plays a role.

AI to the Rescue

My co-producer and genius partner, Ethan Foxx was using AI videos to promote his songs. So Ethan taught me how to create AI videos synchronized with the songs we both produced. I went on my own after a couple of collaborative videos Ethan and I created. I learned how to script for Kaiber AI and create my own AI music videos. It's been a blast waiting overnight for AI to render a video, and now I see the results. It usually takes me two or three times before I get a Video I like. I figured the best way to expand my audience was to post the videos on YouTube and TikTok, targeting a younger demographic. Well,  the results have been pretty impressive, as you can see above in the image from TikTok. Over 11K likes and over 200K views. You can find me on TikTok, or click here for YouTube access. The most popular videos are "Forgive" and "Dark Star Love". The best video is "Cry for Creation"

Art for the 1st Quarter 2024

All of the art for the first quarter resulted from experiments with Gen AI. I used Kaiber for the videos and Microsoft Image Creator. These art projects coincided with my new album, "Ready or Not." Please click here for a summary. For a quick preview of each song, click here. I generated four videos, as listed below, but I started the videos with the following images to give the AI tool a starting point and a storyboard to tell the story of each song. Overall, I liked the experience as an artist, but it won't keep me from doing art by hand or fractals, which also require computer assistance. Here are the art pieces for each song in the order they are on the album.

What Have People Been Reading in the 1st Quarter 2024?

AI and Customer Journey topics will continue to gain momentum in 2024, and it is no surprise that AI topics are racing forward, led by Generative AI. What is surprising is the interest in the basics of Digital Transformation and Results-oriented Communications, aka goal-directed collaboration. There is the usual hunger for trends in business and technology in the new year as people orient themselves and recalibrate goals. There is consistent demand for Digitial Business Platforms (DBP). Another new trend is the re-emergence of old topics combined with AI, including Business Processes and RPA. There was quite a mixture of issues and a significant increase in reading momentum. Most of the increase comes from the U.S., Nordic Countries, and Asia.

Generative AI Made Me Cry

Cry for Creation is the ninth song on the “Ready or Not Album,” representing the youth worried about the earth and the creation left for them. We asked Gen AI to show us creation in its prime, which is starting to burn and become desolate with no signs of life. The children cry out for the hope of restoration and a way forward. I cried thinking about my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren inheriting creation downstream. We thought someone from the next generations should sing this song. My granddaughter has sung in many plays, plus for the AZ Diamondbacks and at various other sporting events. Introducing Karson Sinur’s debut studio performance. I can’t believe she did it in one take with some additional harmony tracks. The lyrics, voice, and video are haunting. Click here for the Gen AI Video

“Ready or Not” is the name of my second album, which is about being a better human being, which we all struggle with on a daily basis. Ethan Foxx is my co-writer/creative producer/guitar/drums, and Jimmy (CAT) Caterine is our creative engineer and lead guitarist, both of whom are my mentors on my musical journey. Our team was ably assisted with great bass playing by Pete Crane. Fantastic strings by Cathie King. Significant keyboard boosts and a terrific trumpet solo from Eric Barker. A lovely harmonica outro by Robert Vincent. A steaming blues lead guitar and solo by the talented Don Supplee. Lead vocals by me. If you want to be notified when the album starts streaming, send me your email at jim.sinur@gmail.com. If you want in on a CD when they arrive, add your snail mail address, and I’ll take care of the rest of the pre-order process. Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy the music.

Can Generative AI Teach Us to Be Kinder?

Kinder is the sixth song on the album (see below), which encourages us to focus on being kinder. The harmonies in this song illustrate the collaboration needed to make it through life. We asked AI to show happy people in a pretty park who were gathered together in a loving way. Next, we asked AI to show people how loving and kind people are to animals. After that segment, we asked AI to show people being kind to older folks who are in need of help. Then we asked AI to show friendly folks at a food pantry that were welcoming and warm. AI finishes with a walk down a path, waving a greeting to all who pass by. AI can show us kindness with a bit of scripting and prompting from humans. Click here for the short Generative AI Video

Another Assist From Genereative AI

Spiritual Treasure is the second song on the album(see below) that speaks about some of the distractions that take us all away from being the true spiritual creatures we are under the veneer of our carbon-based presence. We asked AI to show a busy city where many of us hustle for our existence as the opening of this video. Next, AI helped depict people seeking attention online to expand their digital presence. AI depicts the spiritual aspects of us represented by a cathedral and the family tribe in various activities of love and community. Click here for a short video generated by AI for our song.

Generative AI and Music

Sitting in the middle of arts mixed with science, I get to have fun with the mixology of some of the ingredients. In the past, I've published posts about art and AI and written white papers on AI and processes. This time the mixology includes generative AI and Music where AI matches my music with a script I've written. The Script lays the basic storyline, and AI fills in the details, creating marketing music videos. I have one link below pointing to one of my experiments. I hope you like it. Comments are welcome.

Generative AI with Art is Fun

Recently, I've been working with Generative AI to create music videos for the songs on my upcoming album. You can expect my new music to roll out in the first quarter of 2024, and you will hear and see more about the new music soon. While working with Kaiber to help me deliver music videos, I thought it might be a nice experiment to take some of my art portfolios and make videos out of static 2D art. Here are the results of some of my recent experiments. They are pretty short, so I hope you take some time to enjoy them. To be honest, there were some failures, but most were successful. Enjoy !!

A Creatives Use of AI, Algorithms and Automation

It was not imagined that technology would significantly impact the arts and artists over a decade ago. However, technology is not only assisting the arts; it is starting to turn the arts on its head. The arts have traditionally used technology as an assistant for the creators, but there is a growing movement to have AI generate art as it learns from large bases of image and audio data. I plan on leveraging several of these emerging software capabilities this year, but I have successfully leveraged various technologies as a creator over the last decade. This post aims to give examples of several forms of tech that improved my art and music.

Art:

Traditional artists want an online sales presence to expand their impact and sales. I have used digital flatbed scanners to sell art in a limited copy series. The benefit to my customers is that I can lower the price of any one piece of art by spreading the creation costs over several copies. The benefit to me is that my art gets shared and appreciated in many households and business spaces. The resulting scans can be put online in online marketplaces with high-quality images of my art

MY BEST SELLING HAND PAINTING REPLICATED DIGITALLY to CANVAS or METAL

Digital artists use technology to generate, alter and finish their art pieces. I have used algorithms to do all three to create and alter my most popular pieces that are considered fractals or digitally altered fractals. These pieces have helped me win or place in numerous art contests and placed in locations I could only dream of in the past. My pieces have appeared in the Muse De Lourve, Times Square, and Miami Scope. I used software to generate a starting point that I refined until it was properly colored, staged, and highlighted. In some cases, there were post-processing software tools that made these images even better. I expect to try some generative AI tools soon to see how to create pieces of beauty.

MY BEST SELLING DIGITAL PIECE REPLICATED DIGITALLY to METAL

Music:

All of my recent songs have been digitally engineered with software guided by the skills of a very experienced and successful engineer. Engineering helped shape many individual voice and instrument soundtracks into cohesive pieces of music. All of my music used software to capture sounds from real instruments and create sounds from midi keyboards. These sounds were often enhanced to add effects to make them impact the mood and feel of each song. These sounds were recorded on multiple tracks to be weaved into a song, along with multiple voice recordings that were comped into a cohesive soundtrack. While few of my soundtracks were generated by technology, technology added effects. None of my music would exist without the capable skills of musicians and co-producers supported by various technologies. Even my music promotion used technology to create compelling videos. Here are my top two most popular songs so far,

Net: Net:

Technology has been a clear collaborator in both my art and music, but the creators guided the overall outcomes. I suspect the balance of collaboration will lean more toward technology over time, but I don't see a day coming when the creators are phased out. I will be testing the bounds of technology uses in the arts and hope it will help the resulting works in a more positive way.

The Next Time I see You

In late November 2022, I released my first album, "Amazing Journey" which I coproduced with Ethan Foxx and masterfully engineered by Jimmy "CAT" Caterine. There are a couple of songs that have leaped out as popular. To that end, we created a lyric video for "The Next Time I See You." This song is about reuniting with loved ones once we leave this blue marble. Click here for the Video

Data Infrastructure Debt is Hampering Business Returns

There is a great deal of effort and cost associated with keeping technological components up to date and easy to use for more organizational leverage. Some folks estimate that this can reach near 90% of the budget allocated for technology. Every time we add another technological component, the more debt an organization builds. It is excruciating for data infrastructures as data can be used repeatedly to leverage business benefits. It gets in the way of delivering the newly desired outcomes of better customer journeys, more automation for cost savings, and leveraging an organization's resources in new and innovative ways. This post will concentrate on the data infrastructure portion of the technical dept. At the same time, it explores the causes, adverse effects, and how to solve them for data infrastructures and the ever-growing data sprawl.

Data Infrastructure Debt Causes

  •        An industry trend implies that modern applications need to be built on top of one or more special-purpose databases, thus adding more technical debt for each database. What makes this particularly difficult when combining and translating data for more use and leverage.
  •        Over the past decade, applications have become more data-hungry themselves. As a result, they require particular data dynamics, analytics, and models, implying more cross-use of existing data and new and unique databases.
  •         The explosion of free software tempts folks to leverage what software is already there, leading to more unique data infrastructure components. As a result, it creates a specialty database explosion.

Effects of Data Infrastructure Debt

  •         Data infrastructure debt is insidious and accumulates fast, and is very difficult to undo. It is a multiplier to the existing debt dragging back initiatives that organizations want.
  •         Initiatives that are given the green light are slowed down by the need to aggregate and translate data from many more sources than it would typically take.
  •        Data infrastructure debt keeps the CIO on the sidelines instead of in the critical driver seat for digital efforts in the future. When the CIO is fighting a cost war instead of a results war, digital efforts wane in priority.
  •         We have to hire all the specialty skills to keep the variety of special purpose and legacy databases.
  •         The drag causes businesses to set up their own technology efforts. But, unfortunately, they are often naïve to the problems they are creating and throw the debt over the fence to the CIO after making decisions the CIO would not have allowed.

How to Start Solving Data Debt?

  •         It is essential to stop on-boarding new databases even though the software that comes with the new data might be free or low-cost.
  •         Assuming organizations do not want to rip and replace databases immediately but slowly retire many, buying a modern DBMS that works well in the cloud as a No-SQL approach while still supporting SQL commands and databases is ideal.
  •         It is not by giving up on innovations and digital transformation efforts by prioritizing these great business outcome efforts overpaying past technical debt. However, it may mean not taking advantage of new features on old databases.

Net; Net:

Smart CIOs are reaching for single modern, scalable relational databases that can support the many needs of applications. It would include mixing real-time data with operational, warehouse, big, and archive data with ease. These databases can operate across cloud providers and on-premises. There is a big trend towards capable databases that can act as a data mesh while reducing the data infrastructure technical debt that promotes unnecessary data sprawl and the difficulties with protecting and leveraging that same data.

Coping with Communications in Chaos

The amount of confusion and disorder around communications is just growing by the second in the real world. Conservative numbers say we waste over 30% of our effort just dealing with communication issues. Aggressive numbers say that 60% of work is about the work, not the work itself. Much of this work about work is communications. Chaotic communications are a massive drag on productivity. It only gets compounded in organizations changing to meet their changing customer needs and demands for better services and products—all of this while having to produce bigger and better outcomes often measured in profitability. Let’s explore the problems that we all have with chaotic communications and what are the best coping mechanisms going forward.

Dealing with Noise Communications

We get so many communications simultaneously that it is overbearing. Sure we can make rules to put unique touches in our respective spam files/folders, but the influx of contacts is just overwhelming. We need to turn down the noise level by prioritizing communications. Often the coping mechanism is political and topic-based. Unfortunately, this is barely a minimum.

 Grappling with Multiple Roles

Most roles have multiple and many reporting responsibilities, both solid and dotted lines. Many times people are playing various roles, thus adding another dimension to deal with daily. Sometimes the role is a crucial contributor, and sometimes the role is a manager who is responsible for the contribution of others. Each role over time requires a shifting set of emerging priorities which changes which communications are the most important at any given moment.

Keeping Pace with Expected Results.

Because there are so many communications and roles to associate them with, it is hard to keep pace with efforts. Everyone expects all players "to be up on the latest developments", so we find ourselves scrambling to be pertinent to actions and their highly desired results. Speed is increasing, not decreasing, so this is a tiring effort filled with stress.

I'm sure we all can identify with these problems and more, but the big question is, "What are we going to do about it?" We can do several things besides getting "Sick of Slack" and getting "Tired of Teams." So here are some coping mechanisms.

Simplifying Communications

Instead of showing people how much we know or how important we are by droning on with detail, try summarizing and netting things out. It needs to be done carefully not to offend others but still speed up the communication process. It means that we each become "good citizens of communications".  Let others ask for the detail.

Linking Communications to Results

The very best way to prioritize communications is to link them to desired results. If the touches don't deliver results, they become noise and should be set aside or ignored. It requires a simple discipline of prioritizing results and link only essential documents to them.  It will require a new kind of tool that focuses on results, not just to speed up noise communications that we often see in modern collaboration tools.

Proactively Leveraging Shared Content

Often we have to scramble to find all the communications associated with the following activity about to hit us. Imagine all the content saved on a  shared repository organized by results. It will cut the preparation time and link all the key participants to the latest content. Care must be taken not to collect too much stuff and name the content in obvious ways. The best content will float to the top by results pulling content there.

Net; Net:

It's time to focus on the organizational drag that chaotic communications are costing organizations dearly. The digital overload is real and climbing. There continues to be a significant increase in digital meetings, chats, emails, and document reviews. The preparation time it takes to be up to date to contribute is overwhelming and is often done in a reactive mode. Something has to change and will when communications are tied to results. The significant results and their focused activities must be supported by shared and up to the second content in various forms and formats. It’s time to turn chaos to order. It will put passion back into hybrid work and take the struggle out of communications.

2021 Top 10 Technical Trends

The new year brings new hope for technology to accelerate progress for businesses in this challenging and changing world. I have identified the tech trends that will give organizations not only an opportunity for digital advancement but traction for better business and customer outcomes. I would suggest readers take a glimpse at my 2021 Top Business Trends for the business context that these tech trends play out in for 2021.

Hyperautomation Hits High Gear

With the pressure to do more with less in 2021, hyperautomation gets the early nod in 2021. The taste that RPA gave businesses for savings gets a big boost as other technologies play in the automation game too. This puts a premium on reality-based automation that gets an assist from data/process mining that desperately needs AI to suggest areas of opportunity through the ability to learn quickly from emergent data patterns. In addition, automation will start to collaborate as a full partner in completing work with workers and customers. Hyperautomation will be combining smarter capabilities with users and developers to push low code to the front lines to help with the "innovation democracy".

AI in Everything

Smarter and faster organizations will reap the benefits over others. This means that AI and its cousin analytics will play a key role as they become inline and real-time in assisting businesses to attain outcomes. This means an explosion of smart to every corner of the organization. The IQ may not be the highest, but AI is so much faster than the human eye can see or that the human mind can calculate. Over time, emergent complexity or complications will increase the IQ of AI needed to kick off a race to results through smarter delivery of balanced outcomes.

Sentiment Analysis Drives the Empathy Focused Organization

The need for organizations to be plugged into the feeling of their constituencies, especially customers will create a huge vacuum for voice-driven sentiment analysis. This will be interaction driven in real-time to create better interactions and relationships. These very listening post capabilities will also allow organizations to catch trends such as mentions of the completion as well as alternative products or services. At a very minimum, the present products or services can evolve incrementally through this analysis process.

Composable Implementations

The dream of the composable organization from technical infrastructure to applications to processes to the knowledge bases will start to take off in 2021. The driver for this trend is not wanting to recreate anything that already exists. By using what is there in different combinations and for different goals has always been an "End Game" target for many architectural approaches. This may start at microservices and common APIs, but it will reach business components and templates. The constraining issue has always been discoverability for the user who doesn't know of the "reusable bit".  Through better data structures and AI discoverability, this hurdle will start to lower.

Computer Vision: A New Source of Learning

Computer vision has always had a place in manufacturing for inspection of parts for flaws, but now things are going to expand past static images to images in motion to look for success and failure patterns. Computer vision will be used to learn how the most productive workers deliver in an assembly or service environment to train others in better practices initially which could evolve to machine/bot enhancement. Putting vision at the edge will allow for autonomous adjustments in any movement focused applications from security to dynamic assembly. This will allow for more deep learning opportunities for AI as well.

Monster Data Explodes

Monster data represents data that is overwhelmingly large, unduly complex, can’t be trusted for accuracy. Typically it is composed of multiple kinds of data including structured, unstructured text, voice, image, or video. Some monster data may be unknown or emergent, making it scary to deal with for most individuals, technologies, or organizations. The growth of all sources of data is going to create volume issues along with the IoT awakening. The hunger for human behavioral data of all kinds will drive more data complications and complexity. The amount of inaccurate data will become mind-boggling, but the tolerance for errors will become looser for some applications.

The Internet of Behaviors Emerges

Watching how people behave has been the source of many studies for sales and marketing opportunities. Not only will this trend continue, but it will also accelerate and complicate because of new channels and new sources of behavior mining from the IoT with complex and complicated data sources. Additionally, behaviors will be mined and aggregated for better customer relationships to create customers for life. On the dark side, behaviors will also be mined for potential security threats and other bad behaviors.

Spanning the Data Divide with the Data Mesh

Data management needs a boost to cope with all the new sources and uses, so the data mesh will emerge this year and gain momentum. A data mesh approach reorients data management efforts to align consumers of “data products”. Instead of thinking about many data pipelines and datastore types, a data mesh provides a unified view and architecture for organizational outcomes supported by applications, processes, or dashboards. It combines data inside the cloud with data outside the cloud. A data mesh hides the complexity and variety of data from the end-user. All of this while the speed of business approaches real-time.

Distributed Cloud Advances the Edge

Edge computing allows for the handling of certain work or events at the edge. This means that data and applications work together at the edge without the interference of central control under allowed freedom levels guided by goals and guardrails. While the transparency of behavior will likely reach central observation, decisions or actions can take place close to the point of origin. The distributed cloud will enable this kind of computing behavior for both expected work and unexpected events or patterns.

Putting Bets on New Maturing Advanced Technologies

Because of competitive pressures and emerging business scenarios, organizations will be more aggressive in placing bets on technologies that are emergent in nature and not fully baked for their respective industries. These technologies that have this kind of allure are 5G, Blockchain, IoT, Quantum, and Autonomous Smart Bots. Organizations can't afford to do all of these at once, so the leaders of savvy organizations will pick one or two of these to extend their competitive advantage.

Net; Net:

2021 will be a watershed year. With a tech-savvy incoming leadership in the west and the need for an organization to recover from 2020, I expect these trends to take off along with the advancement of automation to glean savings to drive these efforts. Simultaneously there will a drive for inclusive or better customer journeys driven by a new desire for organizational empathy needed to under-served customers or markets.

2021 Top 10 Business Trends

We are all looking to put 2020 behind us, but there is still a significant hangover from last year. While COVID is enemy number one, we can't take our eyes off of business. To this end, I have identified the top 10 business trends that seem to be moving to the top of the list for your attention. These are not in any priority order, but these are trends to pay attention to going forward. While these trends might start in 2021, they will persist for years.

Integration of  Business Direction & Implementation

Managing the distance between direction and implementation is rising in importance as the time to respond shrinks for organizations to continue to thrive or even capitalize on emerging situations becomes crucial.  In the past, this has been a challenge, even in good times when organizations wish to make changes. Today organizations, especially those that do not plan for emerging scenarios and the triggers that indicate their emergence, are being forced to react quickly to implement change. New methods and tools that link stakeholder outcomes to implementation efforts are starting to emerge once change need is identified.

Changeable & Balanced Stakeholder Driven Outcomes

Two issues need to be dealt with here. One notion is outcomes that are often driven by rigid existing organizations, processes, technologies, and skill sets and are hard to change or optimize. The other is that priority is almost always given to financial bottom lines with a short-term view. This will change as agility needs will demand a reorientation around goals that are balanced to include constituent goals along with financial outcomes. As underlying processes and systems become more flexible and faster to change by business experts, the power to adapt to positive change and skill expansion blooms.

Innovation Democracy Gains Traction

Speed to good innovation will require inclusion and collaboration with more folks. The driver behind this trend is the leverage of collaboration that is focused on more than accomplishing operational work at many levels reaching into change opportunities. This opens up innovation for tactics and strategy from management only control to all those who are involved or care about the outcomes of an organization. This goes beyond an electronic "suggestion box" to the blooming of ideas while implementing the change or executing products or services.

Strategic Agility Given Priority

Often results are aimed at implementation and run forward without a thought for future change. Implementations need to be instrumented with agility in mind to adjust operationally as fast a possible. This minimally helps with strategic shifts in react mode, but savvy organizations can preplan scenarios and have agile responses ready to implement change proactively. Of course, predictive methods and tools will be of great help here.

The Emergence of  a Security Mesh

Security is transforming from a centralized internal set of safeguards managed by one central source to a distributed approach where each asset has a set of security safeguards to start the security efforts early before things get close to the mother ship. Each step closer to the source of data and assets will have additional and even redundant security applied at its level forming a security mesh. In addition, steps towards a better and foolproof digital identity will emerge, probably additionally driven by health goals on top of the existing financial security.

Competitive Customer Journey Experience

This will be a huge change to encourage organizations to not just think customer experience is about standard transactions coming through their channels. The customer journey often starts before and continues beyond an organization's front door to include customer unique goals. These goals often get clustered into personas, but unique additional goals could be personalized. So the scope of customer experience is expanding from a user interface on a mobile device for instance to a holistic experience represented by a complete journey customized by a customer's individual or aggregated goals.

Organizational Culture of Insights

Organizations are expecting to add more analytics to become more aware in advance of reactions. The emergence of fast boards (dashboards that combine real-time with archives) will be the first step to identify signals events or patterns of interest. Organizations that want to optimize their efforts will start with important scenarios or decisions and drive the analytics in those directions. Focused analytics will be the minimum, but organizations will encourage their associates to find emerging insights and innovate with these insights,

360 Organizational View of Interactions

Organizations often only design surveys for after the fact understanding of how effective their organizations are on several fronts. While this is an appropriate approach but does not catch many important issues and trends. To add to the complexity of the effectiveness of feedback, organizations tend to only focus on customers. There will be an expansion to all constituents and a movement to catch sentiment in real-time to respond quickly instead of reactively dealing with negative social outlets' feedback.

Skill Leaps Through Augmentation

The slowest part of change is usually tied to humans and their ability to cope with change or have the proper skills to implement and live with the changes. Organizations are wise enough to not only depend on their people but also on video providers to get more skills. Organizations will invest in buying or building training videos minimally. Savvy organizations will create AI-driven bots that either give audio or video advice in the proper context.

Real-Time Anywhere Operations

Completing work remotely is not new, but has grown in deployment rapidly in 2020 because of COVID. This trend will continue in earnest but will accelerate to real-time and dynamic. My expectation is that freelance customer service will likely become a growing trend. Dynamic labor pools and management will be a growing trend.

Thes above business trends are only tied to me and my network of associates, customers, and research. I hope these get you thinking. If you agree or disagree, I would love to hear from you.

Context: The Connecting Clues for Data

The “database of now” demands a quick understanding of data, particularly in context. There are many opportunities in understanding or misunderstanding data in terms of the contexts they participate in, or are connected to, or connected at the edge of a data neighborhood. Because each context has its own unique vocabulary, you can see the opportunity for misconnects in meaning by not understanding the full context of any statement or set of proven facts.

If someone says, "I like the blue one", how can you evaluate what that means? If it is a swimsuit on the beach, it means one thing, if it's a lobster from the same beach, that means a totally different thing. Context is what gives data real meaning. There are three primary forms of context that help understand the true meaning of the base data. One is the real world contextual meaning, the other is the contextual business meaning, and the other is the technical contextual meaning. Obviously, finding meaning in big or monster data is a challenge, but that difficulty increases as the speed increases, particularly if the data is hard to manage or access.

Figure 1 Representation of Interconnected Contexts.

 Real-World Context

Data has meaning in terms of its definitional domain. When you mention "blue", usually comes from the color domain. However, in the world of mental health, it means a kind of feeling or mood. So understanding the base context in which a data element exists is essential. If blue is associated with a human context, it could be physical and mean a lack of oxygen. It could also mean that the person is adorned in something blue. This is usually cleared up by understanding the base subject or entity that the data element is associated with by having a precise name, meaning, and basic subject area association. Underlying meaning can be tricky when just looking at the data value alone. Having proper meta-data and associations is the ideal solution to this problem.

Business Context

The contextual areas that relate to business fall into three basic categories of meaning. Every data item or group of data items needs to be viewed in terms of the context they are being viewed in or from. Internal contexts where the vocabulary is understood in the context of the internal organization and defined within a particular organization. These internal contexts usually revolve around the organization and skill definitions. There is also the external context that represents the outside world irrespective of the organization itself. The third context is where the outside world touches the internal world. Listed below are the typical contexts in each of these categories:

Common External Contexts:

Communities, Brand/Reputation, Public, Legal Frameworks/Courts, Geographical Regions, Countries, Local Culture, Governmental Agencies, Industries, Dynamic Industry 4.0, Value Chains, Supply Chains, Service Vendors, Markets, Competitors, Prospects, and Competitors Customers.

Common Internal Contexts

Organizational Culture, Goals, Constraints, Boundaries, Actual Customers, Products, Services, Suppliers, Employees, Contractors, Departments, Divisions, General Accounts, Contracts, Physical Infrastructure, Technical Infrastructure, Properties, Investments, Intellectual capital, Business Competencies. Knowledge, Skills, Patents, Success Measures and Statements

Common Interactive Contexts:

Marketing Channels, Advertisements, Customer Journeys, Customer Experience, Loyalty, Satisfaction Scores, Processes, Applications, User interfaces, Websites, Webpages, and System Interfaces.

Technical Context

Data must also be understood in terms of physical contexts, limitations, and potential lag times. Data sources need to be understood in terms of their currency and ability to be integrated easily with other sources. While many views, interactions, and integrations work well at the logical level, physically, they may not be ready in terms of near-real-time capabilities, transformation potential, or performance levels on or off-prem. While meta-data may exist to understand possible joins and combinations, executing them fast enough to be useful in multiple business contexts may not be possible. The physical data types and file storage mechanisms may not be conducive to the demands of new usage scenarios. New low lag databases that are near real-time will become the standard, going forward.

Net; Net:

Data, information, knowledge are quite dependent on the context(s) they participate in or the perspective they are viewed from. Often Knowledge worlds interact; therefore, meanings can overlap and connect in ways that are essential for ultimate understanding, manipulation, or utilization. Knowing the context of your data is absolutely critical for leveraging understanding.  All of this is happening at greater speeds approaching the “database of now” speed necessary to make critical decisions, actions, adjustments or improvements.

Content Intelligence is Real

Today when organizations talk about content analytics, they generally are talking about the effectiveness of marketing efforts or website effectiveness. This is often productive but narrow leverage of content. Content is often the forgotten large vein of big data that has more potential for finding nuggets of business benefits. I would suggest there is a larger category of leveraging content than content analytics applied to revenue generation. I call this Content Intelligence.

Content Intelligence is the act of applying natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) practices to a variety of digital content. Companies use content Intelligence software to provide visibility into the amount of content that is being created, the nature of that content, and how it is used.

The Unprecedented Growth of Unstructured Content:

While the has been a steady growth of traditional content and the importance of enterprise content management (ECM), the use of this content is being leveraged better in the new digital world. While digital methods have increased the productivity of the first mile of content-rich process flows, there is much more to leverage as we move to an increasingly digital world. Organizations are looking to turn audio and video into actionable insights in order to respond to issues in real-time, uncovering insights in large archives, boost the leverage with machine learning ad accelerating decision making.

Increasing the Utilization of Unstructured Content:

We see increased leverage of knowledge by systematically using NLP to find key nouns, relationships, and new leverage points. Imagine mining knowledge out of operations manuals to point to organizational knowledge sources or to create helpful new videos for better outcomes. Organizations are doing this right now. Imagine searching for moving images for defective parts of managing costs and increasing employee safety. This is happening today. Imagine equipping emergency personnel with active real-time maps of buildings and infrastructure during emergencies like active shooter situations. This is being done today. We are seeing the emergence of smart home and smart infrastructures in cities leveraging audio and video. You can expect more leverage of live and active content going forward because of the ability to mine nouns, relationships, contexts, and interactions.

Digital Publishing is Utilizing New Digital Assists:

Creating content is now easier by guiding authors with better grammar, finding parallel writing that might indicate plagiarism, and creating topical indexes for finding useful resources or references. This is very helpful for traditional marketing and lead-generation over and above traditional research and "publish or perish" situations. Consider story mining of narratives to find successful approaches to creating better practices.

Net; Net:

While revenue generation is essential and analytics applied to revenue efforts, content is often an underutilized pocket of big data for organizations. We are in the early days of leveraging intelligence with various kinds of content. There is so much more to do with content intelligence, so it's time to increase your content IQ.
