A Ransomware Recovery Maturity Model is a Must


Ransomware is one of the biggest cyber security threats in 2023 and seriously threatens businesses of all sizes. Ransomware attacks work by infecting your network and locking down your data and computer systems until a ransom is paid to the hacker. A user or organization's critical data is encrypted, so they cannot access files, databases, or applications. A ransom is then demanded to provide access and keep data resources from downstream data sales. Ransomware is often designed to spread across a network and target database and file servers and can thus quickly paralyze an entire organization.

The overall amount of damages paid for ransomware attacks in 2021 was around $20 billion, with payouts in 2030 estimated to total approximately $231 billion. It is just the tip of the cost iceberg because all organizations will pay significant sums of money to defend in depth against Ransomware. Once struck, the time to recover using traditional methods ALWAYS requires way more time and effort than is ever considered. According to the IST Ransomware Task Force, the average downtime can be 21 days, with full recovery taking an average of 287 days from the initial ransomware incident response. The threats and costs are growing so fast that Ransomware has risen to the number three concern during this critical infrastructure attack era. Gartner says businesses are shoring up their defenses by spending another 11% more in 2023. Therefore a Ransomware Recovery Maturity Model is essential and becoming part of an overall security effort covering and recovering from threats and attacks.

The Dangers

As cybercrime escalates, the dangers and costs increase dramatically. It may not be apparent, but adversaries are stockpiling your vulnerabilities. Once made public, there can be a feeding frenzy. A growing number of threats from various sources and kinds of attacks should concern businesses. There is now a sophisticated and growing ecosystem of harmful sources, including:

· Corporate Gangs/Mafia

· Developers

· Access Brokers

· Competitive Forums

· Affiliates

· Crypto Brokers/Money Launders

· Dark Public Relations

Today Ransomware is plenty sophisticated, with not only lockdowns of data but the selling of exfiltrated credentials, data, and even direct access to data and systems. The bad actors are stealing from accounts, committing personal extortion, hacking for hire, and selling sensitive customer/lead data. They use various methods and techniques, including:

· Installing Adware

· Crypto mining

· Credential Theft

· Launching Attacks

· Sending Spam Emails

· Creating Proxy Sites

· Resource Renting

Ransomware of the future intends to maximize the haul, optimizing the revenue per event and victim by leveraging advanced automation and intelligent bots that can swarm to opportunities.

Why a Ransomware Recovery Maturity Model?

Ransomware is rising to the point of a ubiquitous threat, morphing to become more lethal by the day. A growing Ransomware Ecosystem makes the perpetrators seem like a regular organization. Bad actors release press releases to put a veneer on top of the gangs, bribers, opportunistic developers, and brokers. These bribers are out to take your money, so laying down strategies and tactics is undoubtedly worth the time and money. If they can't bribe your organization, they will sell your data for profit or even do both. They are trying to maximize their profit per victim. The above model Figure 1 lays out the progressive steps towards reactively or proactively dealing with Ransomware. The model can be used as a standard classification of ransomware protection efforts while evaluating ransomware software and service providers. The model becomes a gauge for protection levels.

It is essential to visualize the efforts that can be taken to head off the inevitable attacks or sneaky events. Ransomware is the fastest-growing vulnerability associated with cybersecurity and deserves its own set of detection techniques, proven faster reactive approaches, and proactive steps for evolving assurances. Organizations need to have a plan to deal with this growing menace. A ransomware maturity model overlaid over a well-accepted and established security model is presented here. While security gets significant attention and investment from top management in most organizations, Ransomware has not. The model phases below outline the necessary maturity steps in dealing with Ransomware.

What are the Standard Maturity Levels?

Aware

Aware is the level where management realizes that Ransomware is an issue that needs action. Security folks recognize that bad actors start small with low risk leading to acceleration and expansion. Bad actors see a compromised victim as a growing bag of money to tap and can't be trusted once the bribe is paid. Sometimes they steal data and credentials to sell later. Later they often crypto-mine and install adware. In case they use an advanced attack to steal money or leverage a campaign to phish trusted partners or customers. Education is the key to awareness even as new nasty twists emerge, but data is the essential source to attack.

Active

There needs to be a commitment to detection and recovery that protects people, processes, and data. Active action puts up some resistance and foils some simple, early attacks. It is taking a defensive reaction of informing your people and notifying constituents to watch out for phishing attacks that open holes in the security perimeter is a vital action here. It means better-communicated policies to mitigate social engineering attacks that entice people to open emails and links, allowing a gateway for further evil actions. Multi-factor authentication is a typical response. It may mean you have to teach users to spot rogue URLs.

Operational

Operational is where there is a concerted effort to put good practices into place that make it hard for ransomware perpetrators to cash into revenue streams. It means focusing on understanding the risky areas of your organization's assets. There needs to be a repeating process for classifying data and processes for the organization's risk level. Risk analysis and prioritization are vital ongoing efforts. Organizations must assume they have already been infected and look for dormant attachments to patches and other code parasites. Key data sources must be clean before backups can be trusted. It means that data changes must be tracked and analyzed. Once cleaned, some mass data restoration procedures must be in place.

Managed

Managed is where the efforts turn to early detection, focus, and isolation. Now batch detection depends on real-time. Intrusions are found early, and affected data is isolated whenever possible to prevent infection spread. Isolation allows for a more focused recovery that optimizes speed to restoration. Even if isolation is not possible, automation of the recovery process should be established. Knowing that a clean backup is available close in synch with current operations allows for automation of mass recovery minimally or focused recovery ideally. It makes data defense and protection a cornerstone of response to Ransomware.

Optimized

It is making this automation smarter and closer to self-healing, the next step in the maturity model. It is done without human intervention except for notification that it has occurred. It means that AI and analytics are used to detect cyberattacks that are in progress, respond to threats intelligently, and eventually enable bots that detect advanced malware. It now becomes "good-bots vs. bad-bots."

A ransomware maturity model is necessary to determine the level of protection and understand what is being done to avoid paying the bad guys. The maturity model also is used as a guide for the protection from ransomware journey that gives directions and guideposts to show progress and feel like progress is understood in context. Ensure your ransomware technology and service providers subscribe to a maturity model to track progress for better protection. It is an escalating war that needs constant tuning. Organizations can't wait to be attacked, as a ransomware event's probability of getting hit by the day is getting higher. It's not just the crooks as we hear of wars and rumors of wars generating cyber attacks that may include payoffs. Getting ahead of these attacks is crucial by spending more time and effort upfront to defend, detect, and data-proof your organization. Hiring an experienced set of services or buying important software is wise.

When customer representatives encounter a problematic situation or customer, voice sentiment can help intercept negative emotions, predict potential outcomes and suggest appropriate responses.

Often representatives are too busy servicing the “now request’ and don’t hear the suggestion for a new or better product/feature. Even if the rep understood the hint, often completing the immediate transaction overrides collecting the good ideas.

Sometimes predicting negative emotions can trigger the representative to go into the listening mode to show empathy. Voice sentiment can warn all of a conversation headed for difficulty.

By listening to situations, management can assist employees with additional collaborations with other employees or knowledge bots to help while clients are on the line or online at the web.

By listening to workers, management can hear the interactions to help employees proactively manage their technologies and businesses better.

Rollout New Processes & Scripts for Outcomes

Employees are often the lightning rods for organizations and ideas for tweaks to the processes. This focus is genuine for remote workers who feel alone and isolated.

Build Assists for Balancing Corporate KPIs with Customer Goals

To change the balance from KPIs and to get the customer off the phone as fast as possible, organizations can listen between the lines for satisfying customers better.

Listen for Training & Promotional Opportunities

By analyzing conversations, organizations can find stars to promote and train those employees that are struggling.

Identify New Segments/Personas

By listening to voice data, management can identify new and emerging groups of prospects or customers to build unique paths for them,

Specialty Digital Business Platforms are Flourishing

 Digital Business Platforms (DBPs) are springing up worldwide because of the need for more combined functionality that works seamlessly together for the business professional. While there are still many richly featured/complete business platforms out there that are thriving well, there is also an explosion of specialty digital business platforms that focus on outcomes that are immediately appealing to organizations. This post will try to identify and describe the business-focused digital platforms instead of technical and infrastructural digital platforms. I have found 10 of these categories so far that I have described below.  I give some example vendors, but my lists are not exhaustive. All-Inclusive DBPs

These DBPs bring together as close to fully functional digital features that typically business function for core transactions,  business process for automation combined with friendly customer/employee experiences, analytics/AI for the added insight, low code data integration (aka Fabric/Mesh) and development and a comprehensive internet of things (IoT) with digital twins. These first started to emerge in 2015 and rapidly grew with the digital transformation emphasis. They bring the advantage of holistic and integrated platforms that need little augmentation. DBPs put the integration of many silo technology stacks in the rearview mirror. The degree of integration quality and the amount will vary by vendor. Specialty Digital Business Platforms

Specialty DBPs combine/integrate two or more needed technology silos for significant benefit to organizations in their digital transformation journey, even if it is only a portion of that journey. The key driver for these decisions is often tactical to deliver a sorely needed set of business outcomes as quickly as possible. They are not necessarily aimed at becoming an all-inclusive DBP, but they can play a role in creating their own all-inclusive digital business platform.

 

1.      Business Application Driven DBPs

These platforms concentrate on a business application or specific business processes that contribute to horizontal business outcomes, such as human resource (HR) onboarding or enterprise resource planning (ERP). Additionally, vertically based suites of processes and applications revolve around specific industries such as insurance claims, oil and gas platforms management, mortgage loan processing, or banking systems. The list is relatively long of vertical applications or services available.

2.      Sales/Customer Experience Enablement Platforms

This class of platforms combines customer relationship management from sales through the servicing of customers. Customer Experience platforms are usually a collection of tools that help companies establish their customer interaction experiences and goals. The breadth of channels through which customers can interact with a company is often so spread out that it's difficult for just one solution to manage them all. The sales process is where the interaction starts with the customer, and these platforms also include sales automation capabilities that speed sales and revenue pipeline management.

3.      Business Process/Workflow Platforms (BPM)BPM software

A BPM platform provides a framework and tools for managing the tasks and workflow related to people or systems. Typically, BPM software helps define, automate, and report processes to help businesses optimize businesses to deliver on organizational goals. The processes often span an organization's full operations and are aimed at monitoring the effectiveness of operations. They manage the full process lifecycle and processes instances.

4.      Hyperautomation Platforms

Hyperautomation is the application of various combinations of advanced technologies like robotic process automation (RPA), Artificial Intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), low-code, and Process Mining (PM) to augment workers, accelerate task completion, and even automate processes in ways that are significantly more impactful than traditional automation capabilities. An example would smart bots who collaborate with knowledge workers to complete work.

5.      Collaborative Work Platform

A collaborative platform is a virtual workspace where resources and tools are aggregated to facilitate communication and personal interaction, particularly in projects or casework. Often sharing content is involved even if it is real-time or leveraged in work schedules.

6.      Data Science/Analytic Platform

These platforms rely on transparent data access, consistent metadata, strong enterprise governance, automated machine learning, deep learning, and model building, operationalized model management, and tools that measure and improve its impact on business. You might think of a data science platform as a factory for creating analytic models. These platforms are for organizations that are always listening and analyzing for innovation.

7.      Data Mesh/Fabric Platform

Data mesh/fabric is an architecture and set of data services that provide consistent capabilities across a choice of endpoints spanning on-premises and multiple cloud environmentsThe Data Mesh/Fabric simplifies and integrates data management across cloud and on-premises to accelerate digital transformation. It allows for creating dynamic data views quickly in real-time to manage to the moment.

8.      Digital Twin Platform

Digital twin software provides a virtual representation or simulation of a physical asset and is used to monitor the asset's performance in real-time. These tools are used to simulate performance, predict potential maintenance needs, and ultimately optimize the asset for peak performance.

9.      Cybersecurity Platform

Cybersecurity platforms should be able to prevent, detect, and respond to threats across an enterprise IT infrastructure (i.e., endpoints, networks, servers, or cloud-based workloads). In simple terms, a Data Security Platform (DSP) is a type of data security solution that aims to combine a suite of traditionally siloed security tools. Most Data Security Platforms will combine functionality designed to locate and protect data on-premises and in the cloud.

Emerging Hybrid Platforms combine various siloed technologies into a more usable combination of functionalities. We are still in the emergent stage of the specialized and generalized digital business platforms.

Specialty DBPs started sprouting up around specific outcomes that organizations wanted early in their digital journeys. Vendors that chased these outcomes became popular, and some are even growing to all-inclusive DBPs while delivering impressive and focused benefits along the way. I expect this convergence for convenience to accelerate and continue before a consolidation that will likely be economically and advantage driven. Over time some of these specialty vendors will grow to compete with the all-inclusive DBPs and possibly collaborate with the all-inclusive DBPs.

2021 Top 10 Business Trends

We are all looking to put 2020 behind us, but there is still a significant hangover from last year. While COVID is enemy number one, we can't take our eyes off of business. To this end, I have identified the top 10 business trends that seem to be moving to the top of the list for your attention. These are not in any priority order, but these are trends to pay attention to going forward. While these trends might start in 2021, they will persist for years.

Integration of  Business Direction & Implementation

Managing the distance between direction and implementation is rising in importance as the time to respond shrinks for organizations to continue to thrive or even capitalize on emerging situations becomes crucial.  In the past, this has been a challenge, even in good times when organizations wish to make changes. Today organizations, especially those that do not plan for emerging scenarios and the triggers that indicate their emergence, are being forced to react quickly to implement change. New methods and tools that link stakeholder outcomes to implementation efforts are starting to emerge once change need is identified. 

Changeable & Balanced Stakeholder Driven Outcomes

Two issues need to be dealt with here. One notion is outcomes that are often driven by rigid existing organizations, processes, technologies, and skill sets and are hard to change or optimize. The other is that priority is almost always given to financial bottom lines with a short-term view. This will change as agility needs will demand a reorientation around goals that are balanced to include constituent goals along with financial outcomes. As underlying processes and systems become more flexible and faster to change by business experts, the power to adapt to positive change and skill expansion blooms.

Innovation Democracy Gains Traction

Speed to good innovation will require inclusion and collaboration with more folks. The driver behind this trend is the leverage of collaboration that is focused on more than accomplishing operational work at many levels reaching into change opportunities. This opens up innovation for tactics and strategy from management only control to all those who are involved or care about the outcomes of an organization. This goes beyond an electronic "suggestion box" to the blooming of ideas while implementing the change or executing products or services.

Strategic Agility Given Priority

Often results are aimed at implementation and run forward without a thought for future change. Implementations need to be instrumented with agility in mind to adjust operationally as fast a possible. This minimally helps with strategic shifts in react mode, but savvy organizations can preplan scenarios and have agile responses ready to implement change proactively. Of course, predictive methods and tools will be of great help here. 

The Emergence of  a Security Mesh

Security is transforming from a centralized internal set of safeguards managed by one central source to a distributed approach where each asset has a set of security safeguards to start the security efforts early before things get close to the mother ship. Each step closer to the source of data and assets will have additional and even redundant security applied at its level forming a security mesh. In addition, steps towards a better and foolproof digital identity will emerge, probably additionally driven by health goals on top of the existing financial security. 

Competitive Customer Journey Experience

This will be a huge change to encourage organizations to not just think customer experience is about standard transactions coming through their channels. The customer journey often starts before and continues beyond an organization's front door to include customer unique goals. These goals often get clustered into personas, but unique additional goals could be personalized. So the scope of customer experience is expanding from a user interface on a mobile device for instance to a holistic experience represented by a complete journey customized by a customer's individual or aggregated goals. 

Organizational Culture of Insights

Organizations are expecting to add more analytics to become more aware in advance of reactions. The emergence of fast boards (dashboards that combine real-time with archives) will be the first step to identify signals events or patterns of interest. Organizations that want to optimize their efforts will start with important scenarios or decisions and drive the analytics in those directions. Focused analytics will be the minimum, but organizations will encourage their associates to find emerging insights and innovate with these insights, 

360 Organizational View of Interactions

Organizations often only design surveys for after the fact understanding of how effective their organizations are on several fronts. While this is an appropriate approach but does not catch many important issues and trends. To add to the complexity of the effectiveness of feedback, organizations tend to only focus on customers. There will be an expansion to all constituents and a movement to catch sentiment in real-time to respond quickly instead of reactively dealing with negative social outlets' feedback. 

Skill Leaps Through Augmentation 

The slowest part of change is usually tied to humans and their ability to cope with change or have the proper skills to implement and live with the changes. Organizations are wise enough to not only depend on their people but also on video providers to get more skills. Organizations will invest in buying or building training videos minimally. Savvy organizations will create AI-driven bots that either give audio or video advice in the proper context. 

Real-Time Anywhere Operations

Completing work remotely is not new, but has grown in deployment rapidly in 2020 because of COVID. This trend will continue in earnest but will accelerate to real-time and dynamic. My expectation is that freelance customer service will likely become a growing trend. Dynamic labor pools and management will be a growing trend.

A Digital Assist for Active Shooter Incidents


If you have not heard of active shooter incidents recently, you have been living under a rock. Imagine what 2D floor plans and 3D models can do to assist these situations. Even without intelligent digital assistants, law enforcement can get a better handle on the structure involved with any particular incident. While these digital models are helpful, they are difficult and time consuming to create. This case study is about the evolving scanning, creation, and leverage of visual digital models on a large scale.


The Problem:

Usually, we think of scanning on a small scale in and around smaller sized products. Imagine a much larger scale like all the K-12 schools in the US? According to scanning professionals, to map just the K-12   schools in the U.S., it would take a scanning team, scanning 100,000 square feet per day, seven days a week, a total of 188 years to complete. This estimate addresses only the public schools and does not address any of the many private schools, let alone the post-secondary school facilities.
Robert W. Meyers J.D. from the Entropy Group LLC says ““Active shooter incidents are a growing concerns in the United States, with death tolls, most predominantly in schools, rapidly rising and law enforcement resources stretched beyond breaking point. With the unpredictability of these incidents, both in scale and location, the team at Entropy Group LLC has been working alongside law enforcement and the US attorneys nationwide in order to compress response times, by utilizing 2D floor plans and 3D models.

The Solution:

When confronted with the magnitude of the effort it was immediately obvious to Entropy Group   that we needed to join forces with 3D mobile mapping and monitoring technology specialists, GeoSLAM because their ZEB REVO line of scanners provide the necessary accuracy and are much more time-efficient than other laser scanner technologies. To finalize the proof of the efficacy of the patent filing, Entropy Group LLC recently completed a simulated active shooter incident where six law enforcement officers were tested by responding to a fictitious scenario. Officers were provided a detailed floorplan of the two-building which is currently used as a church and parochial school facility. The structure is quite complex with many classrooms, counseling rooms, worship sanctuary, multi-media studios, café area, and church offices.

The Results:

The results of the exercise indicate that officers which have access to the 2D floor plans ahead of time, improve their situational awareness, their confidence in responding to a facility that they have never been to previously, by gaining “facility familiarity” thorough review of floor plans and other data prior to their response. Additionally, response times were documented to decrease by up to 21%. This improvement in response will directly result in fewer deaths and casualties. GeoSlam claims to deliver at least a 10X time reduction in the scanning process.

Art for 2Q 2017

This quarter was mostly about experimentation, so I tried a bunch of new things. If you like any of it, let me know. I completed two paintings that leveraged some past lessons of combining water based paints in a semi-liquid form (named a dirty pour). I completed three new 3D fractals as well

Celebrating a Life

It's sad when you lose a family member and a hero. My dad passed away a week ago now and I miss his big character and great sense of humor. He was a wise man who put his family first because he did not have a father and mother to raise him. He and his two brothers Ed and Rob were raised by my old Dutch great grandfather, who had more stories for three life times. My grandfather hung around the family bar, in Walkers Point Milwaukee and left his three boys to fend for themselves. Family was everything to my dad.

He was a Great Dad:

He hammered home the importance of family and gaining the wisdom of God to make it through life. We were told over and over to love others like God loves us and leverage the skills God gave us. He loved his kids, grand kids and great grand kids. We were always safe and secure plus had shelter, food and love. His sense of humor permeated the rooms where he was at all times. My mom, Carol, and younger brother Mike were always laughing with him or at him.



Dad was a Great Employee:

Dad worked his tail off to keep us going and he put in lots of hours pursuing safe transport of passengers and freight. He would work many hours to keep us going and my mom held it all together with her upbeat attitude.


Dads Dreams:

He wanted to be a pilot and worked his way up to a multi-engine & instruments flight instructor from bringing home a surplus air trainer (BT13) like the one pictured below that his brothers timeshared together. For a while he had his own Beechcraft Musketeer, like the one pictured below, that he finally sold when he hit 74. After that he gave lessons and dragged gliders for a while.


Dad was a Sportsman:

He loved to shoot trap gun and fish for muskies. He was my fishing buddy from when I was age 5 to recently when his COPD caught up with him. He and my mom bought a cabin on a lake with seven acres and 500 ft of lake access. He pursued muskies with abandon and earned every one including a 30 pound trophy still hanging in the winterized cabin that my mom and dad kept going. Mom loved all the animals that came to the multiple feeders they kept fresh. My dad heated his house with wood until he hit the early 80s. We had to talk him into natural gas.


Bottom Line:

He was a good man who taught us all what it meant to strike the balance of family, fun and worshipping the God who made us and gave us plenty. So long Pops!! Say "hi" to Andy and the others that have gone on before us. Rest in peace now that you are free from a broken body.

Peace be to all. If you don't celebrate Good Friday and Easter, please pass by this one. For those who do, Easter is the celebration of our freedom and peace.
